An “Ugly” Affair

Kya wahaan din hai abhi bhi..

Papa tum rehte jahaan ho…

Papa, Song Lyric, Ugly.

Every time I watch a film that fades in with “Fuh Se Phantom”, I am overwhelmed. And, when the feature is directed by Anurag Kashyap, it only brings in the thrills.

“UGLY” is a must-watch and is certainly not for the faint-hearted. A trivia of IMDB states that Anurag Kashyap personally requested the parents of

Anshikaa Shrivastava (the child actor who played Kali), did not allow her to see the film because of its dark theme. So, watch the film with an 18+ merit, and, under your own consent.

The story begins with brief introductions of a few main characters, and then it ripples into motion after the kidnapping of a 10-year-old girl. The victim, Kali, is the daughter of Rahul Kapoor – a struggling actor, and the step-daughter of Shoumik Bose – a brash cop. While fatherhood is the common factor among the two, Rahul and Shoumik have had their differences since college. Personal feuds lead the men to take their own paths, by crossing each other’s, to find Kali. The search is entangled with a web of lies of sidelined characters who contribute to the erupting suspense. While the story is in play, it reveals the dark and lucrative character traits of men and women. In the meantime, it takes its own course to solve the investigation of who the kidnapper really is.

Ugly is a part of Anurag Kashyap’s genre of filmmaking – dark, intense and dramatic.

With the least mediocrity and more natural enactment, the film gives a realistic appeal and makes the scenarios believable. Like most of Kashyap’s films such as ‘Dev-D’ and the ‘Gangs Of Wasseypur’ series, Ugly gets you gripped to the screen till the credits roll. The only question is whether you can handle the suspense.

IMDB rates the film at 8+. I would give it an 8.5. To wrap up, Ugly is a neat flick to watch!
